  5. GENERAL INFORMATION

  8. PRODUCT SERIAL NUMBER
  9. Your unique product serial number is displayed
  10. when you open the Gallery Effects application. You can
  11. also display it from the Gallery Effects application by choosing 
  12. "About Gallery Effects" from the "Help" menu.

  15. DONÆT ALTER INSTALLED FILES
  16. Other than moving or copying the installed files as 
  17. mentioned on the System Requirements and Installation Card, 
  18. you should not move or delete any of the files installed by 
  19. Gallery Effects. For example, you should not move or delete 
  20. the items that are installed in the ALDUS or 
  21. CLASSIC.GE directories.

  24. ABOUT THE ALDUS DIRECTORY
  25. Gallery Effects uses the ALDUS directory to store
  26. files that are shared with other Aldus products.

  31. USING THE FREE GALLERY EFFECTS: 
  32. CLASSIC ART, VOLUME 2 SAMPLER
  33. A FREE sampler from Gallery Effects: Classic Art,
  34. Volume 2 has been included to give you the opportunity
  35. to experiment with one of the effects from Classic Art,
  36. Volume 2. The Sampler is the Texturizer effect, which
  37. integrates an image with a user-selected surface texture.
  38.  
  39. To use the Gallery Effects: Classic Art,
  40. Volume 2 sampler:
  41. 1. Open or paste the bitmapped image to which you 
  42. want to apply the effect.
  43.  
  44. 2. Use one of the Selection tools to select an area to 
  45. which to apply the effect, or select the entire image. 
  46.  
  47. 3. Choose the effect from the appropriate menu.
  48.  
  49. * In the Gallery Effects application, choose Texturizer
  50. from the Gallery Effects: Classic Art 2 
  51. cascading menu from the Effects menu.
  52.  
  53. * In PhotoStyler, choose Texturizer from 
  54. the Gallery Effects: Classic Art 2 cascading 
  55. menu from the Image menu.
  56.  
  57. * In Fractal Design Painter, choose Texturizer 
  58. from the Filter cascading menu from the Edit menu.
  59.  
  60. Note: For information about accessing plug-in filters 
  61. in other host applications, consult their respective user manuals.

  63. The Effects Settings dialog box for the effect opens. 
  64. The image is displayed in the left frame as a thumbnail 
  65. view of the original image or selection.
  66.  
  67. 4. Drag the preview frame over the part of the image you 
  68. want to preview.
  69.  
  70. The area within the frame appears in the box labeled "Before".
  71.  
  72. 5. Click Preview to preview the effect.
  73.  
  74. After a short delay, a preview of the effect applied to the 
  75. framed image appears in the box labeled "After".
  76.  
  77. 6. Click the Texture Controls button to access and change 
  78. the texture settings.
  79.  
  80. 7. Adjust the controls to experiment with different settings. 
  81. Experiment using different textures by choosing a texture
  82. from the Type pop-up menu or by choosing "TIFF File" and
  83. using the textures within the TEXTURES directory or your
  84. own texture file in the TIF format. For specific information 
  85. on the individual controls for each effect, click Help. 
  86. After adjusting the controls, click OK to close the 
  87. Texture Controls dialog box

  89. 8. Click preview to see the effect of the new settings.

  91. 9. When the effect is the way you want it, click Apply 
  92. to apply the effect to your image or selection.

  103. INFORMATION ON USING THE EFFECTS

  105. 14 MB LIMIT ON IMAGE FILES
  106. The effects can work with images up to 14 MB in size, 
  107. if your system can accommodate such large files.
  108.

  110. IMAGE MAY APPEAR DARK AFTER 
  111. APPLYING CERTAIN EFFECTS
  112. If you apply certain effects to an image in which 
  113. there is not much variation in brightness, the image 
  114. may appear very dark. In particular, this may occur 
  115. with Fresco, Dark Strokes, and Watercolor, since 
  116. these effects are best suited for images with a wide 
  117. variation in brightness.

  120. PREVIEW MAY NOT LOOK EXACTLY LIKE FINAL RESULT
  121. The preview in the Effect Settings dialog box 
  122. corresponds as closely as possible to how the effect 
  123. will look when applied to the entire image or 
  124. selection. With some effects and images, there can be 
  125. a discrepancy between the preview and the final 
  126. result. This is because the preview shows the effect 
  127. as it appears on a portion of the image or selection. 
  128. To obtain a better indication of the final result, 
  129. preview several different areas of the image before 
  130. applying the effect to the image.

  133. IF PREVIEW FRAME IS NOT EASILY VISIBLE IN PREVIEW
  134. In rare cases, if you are working with an image 
  135. containing a lot of noise, the preview frame in the 
  136. Effect Settings dialog box may not be easily visible 
  137. in the preview. The preview frame is actually there, 
  138. but may not be easily visible because of the visual 
  139. interaction with the image in the preview. To move 
  140. the preview frame, move the pointer over the center 
  141. of the preview; the cursor will change to a four-way 
  142. arrow allowing you to move the preview frame.

  147. INFORMATION ON THE GALLERY EFFECTS APPLICATION

  150. "GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT" WHEN OPENING
  151. GALLERY EFFECTS
  152. In rare cases, when opening Gallery Effects, you may get 
  153. a "General Protection Fault " alert message. This occurs when
  154. Gallery Effects finds an older version of the ALDVM.DLL and 
  155. ALDIM.DLL files on the hard disk. This problem can be addressed
  156. by moving the reference to the ALDUS directory to the front of 
  157. the path statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 
  158.  
  159. Alternatively, if youÆve had previous versions of PageMaker on 
  160. your system, the ALDVM.DLL and ALDIM.DLL files may 
  161. be located in your WINDOWS directory. Compare the dates 
  162. of these files with those in the ALDUS directory. If the 
  163. ALDVM.DLL and ALDIM.DLL files within the WINDOWS 
  164. directory are older than those in the ALDUS directory, then 
  165. you should delete those in the WINDOWS directory.

  168. 14 MB LIMIT ON IMAGE FILES
  169. The Gallery Effects application can open and work with images 
  170. up to 14 MB in size, if your system can accommodate such 
  171. large files.

  174. NUMBERS MAY BE ROUNDED IN DOCUMENT INFO 
  175. DIALOG BOX
  176. When specifying an image size in the New Document 
  177. and Resize Document dialog boxes, in any unit of 
  178. measurement other pixels, the numbers will be 
  179. rounded to the nearest whole pixel value. Thus, the 
  180. sizes in the Document Info dialog box may differ 
  181. very slightly from what you specified.

  184. IF SMALL WHITE AREAS APPEAR WHEN 
  185. PASTING INTO A SELECTION
  186. In some instances, pasting an irregular selection into 
  187. another irregular selection may cause very small 
  188. white areas to appear. If this occurs, try using the 
  189. rectangle selection tool to select the image you want to 
  190. paste and then paste it into the irregular selection.

  193. SELECTIONS WITH OPTA MONALISA OR 
  194. RADIUS MULTIVIEW 24 CARD
  195. When using the Opta MonaLisa or Radius MultiView 
  196. 24 graphics card, selections may blink on and off 
  197. instead of appearing as moving dashed lines 
  198. (marquee).

  201. OPENED IMAGES DONÆT APPEAR
  202. When running Norton Desktop 1.0, images that are
  203. opened with Gallery Effects donÆt appear. To remedy this,
  204. disable Desktop and run Gallery Effects under Windows,
  205. or upgrade to Desktop 2.0.
  206.  
  207. If youÆre using an ATi video board with the Crystal Fonts driver
  208. selected, images that are opened with Gallery Effects donÆt appear. 
  209. To remedy this, in Windows setup, select an ATi driver that 
  210. doesnÆt use Crystal Fonts.
  211.  
  212. Certain programs that automatically load on startup, such as 
  213. WindowMaker or Your Way, may cause images that are 
  214. opened with Gallery Effects to not appear. To remedy this, 
  215. temporarily disable the line in the WIN.INI file that loads
  216. the offending program.

  221. INFORMATION FOR ALDUS« PHOTOSTYLER(TM) 1.1 USERS
  222.

  224. IF YOU CANNOT ACCESS THE PLUG-IN FILTERS
  225. If you cannot access the Gallery Effects plug-in filters from
  226. within PhotoStyler, be sure that you are using PhotoStyler 1.1
  227. or later.
  228.  
  229. IF AN IMAGE TURNS A SOLID COLOR, WHITE, OR 
  230. BLACK AFTER APPLYING AN EFFECT 
  231. Several effects (Charcoal, Chalk and Charcoal, and 
  232. Graphic Pen) use PhotoStylerÆs foreground and 
  233. background colors when applying the effect. If both 
  234. the foreground and background colors are the same 
  235. color, the image will appear that color when applying 
  236. one of the above three effects. You should make sure 
  237. that the foreground color and the background color are 
  238. different prior to applying one of these three effects.

  243. FOR FRACTAL DESIGN PAINTER(TM) 1.2 USERS
  244.  
  245. EFFECTS CANNOT BE PERFORMED ON MOVED OR 
  246. PASTED SELECTIONS
  247. If you paste a selection into a document or move an 
  248. existing selection, you can choose an effect but 
  249. nothing happens. To overcome this problem, you 
  250. should deselect the current selection and then reselect it 
  251. prior to choosing an effect.

  254. EFFECTS CANNOT BE APPLIED TO FRISKETS
  255. Even though the effects can be selected from the 
  256. Filter cascading menu when a frisket is present, 
  257. Painter does not apply the effects to the frisket.

  260. FRISKET GETS CREATED AFTER APPLYING AN EFFECT
  261. If you make a selection and apply an effect, Painter 
  262. creates a frisket from the selection. If you want to 
  263. paint as usual, clear or shut off the frisket.

  266. NARROW VERTICAL LINE MAY APPEAR AFTER 
  267. APPLYING AN EFFECT
  268. After an effect is applied on a rectangular selection 
  269. (not the entire image), a vertical line may appear at 
  270. the left edge of the deselected image.
